I read with interest (June 5) the few lines about the upcoming new library laws. Obviously, this is a step in the right direction and one that the Malta School Library Association has been waiting for.

However, I hope that Minister Louis Galea will consult interested parties, such as the MSLA and MaLIA about such an important matter.

May I also point out the need that librarians have their profession recognised by law, something that to date is not.

Another thing to be brought to the fore is the fact that all libraries (including school ones) need to be taken care of by professionals - namely librarians. If we believe that libraries and, therefore, librarians can make a difference (as research indicates) then every library should be managed by librarians.

Having the right people in the right position doing the right thing is what matters most.

We are past the time that people are literally thrown into libraries because (1) they cannot stick anywhere else, (2) they are retiring and need a resting place and (3) it is nice to have half the teaching load!
