Driver critically injured

A car yesterday smashed into a temporary concrete barrier put up on the Birkirkara by-pass, leaving its male driver critically injured.

A line of concrete blocks was placed across the road on the lane leading to Lija a few weeks ago, blocking off access to the university due to works taking place on a new road network.

The police said the man, from Attard, had to be extracted from his badly damaged Volkswagen Polo by Civil Protection personnel. The accident happened shortly before 7 p.m.

A magisterial inquiry and police investigation are under way.
