The Maltese National UNESCO Commission will receive nominations for the UNESCO Felix Houphouet-Boigny Peace Prize, which honours individuals, bodies or institutions that have made a significant contribution to promoting, seeking, safeguarding or maintaining peace.
The prize, which comprises a cash award of €122,000 (Lm53,000), a gold medal and a Peace diploma, is awarded every year to one or more prizewinners by an international jury made up eminent personalities and chaired by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Men, women or institutions that have acquired an international reputation for their major contribution to the promotion of peace, democracy and human rights may apply or be nominated.
Participants are requested to write two to three pages in connection with the nominees' contribution to the promotion of peace, democracy and human rights.
Individuals on institutions interested in being nominated are requested to write to Mr Albert V. Rutter, Hon. Secretary, Maltese National Commission for UNESCO, Ministry of Education, Floriana, requesting a nomination form, by September 1.
Previous nominee of the Felix Houphouet- Boigny Prize include Nelson Mandela and Frederik W. De Klerk, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Jimmy Carter, the Community of Sant'Egidio, Italy, and Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
