Unions argue over Maltapost majority

The General Workers' Union has written to Maltapost to request recognition as the representative of the company's workforce.

It said it could produce documentary evidence to show that it now represented more than half the workers, just eight months after the workers had opted to be represented by the Union Haddiema Maghqudin.

The GWU also called on the Maltapost management to stop talks being held with the UHM.

It also wrote to the director of industrial relations, inviting him to verify that it now represented the majority of workers.

But the UHM rebutted the GWU's claim, maintaining it enjoyed the support of more than 50 per cent of the workers.

It accused the GWU of choosing to undermine the good work being done between the UHM and Maltapost at a delicate stage in the process of negotiations for a new collective agreement.
