Friends of the Earth (Malta) have insisted that the siting of the new landfill should be decided after consultation with the civil society.

The organisation said that according to the waste management strategy, Malta should have a new, properly managed, EU standard landfill by the end of this year. An environment impact assessment for a new landfill was being carried out but the public was being left in the dark, it said.

The organisation said the landfill should only accept separated waste and Progett Skart and other government authorities needed to speed up the process for the introduction of waste separation at source.

There should be a dual line composting plant at Sant' Antnin so that waste not properly separated could be turned into stable organic matter, Friends of the Earth said.
