The Union Haddiema Maghqudin yesterday called on the government and Malta's representatives at the Convention on the Future of Europe to intensify their efforts to bring about a European Constitution which would live up to the legitimate aspirations of working people.
The UHM made its plea in a memo that was presented to, and discussed with, Michael Frendo, one of Malta's representatives at the convention.
Dr Frendo promised to raise the UHM's issues at the European Convention Union.
The UHM said "making Europe work for the people" remained its basic aim. It said that "to some extent", the final draft of the constitution did take into account the social values and objectives as well as the role of social partners and social dialogue.
"The draft, however, still falls short of convincingly addressing all our aspirations."
The UHM is particularly concerned at the lack of a clear and committed decision to integrate the Charter of Fundamental Rights with full legal effects into the constitution.
