A national campaign should be considered to promote the concept of teleworking, a breakfast meeting of the Computer Society of Malta concluded.
"While teleworking can offer a number of advantages to employers, employees and society, proper planning is important to ensure that the arrangement works and the experience is a positive one," the society said in a statement at the conclusion of the meeting.
The most important condition for successful teleworking is that the employer and employee should enjoy a good working relationship based on trust. This may not always be the case in practice, and might require a cultural change, it said.
The society said that modern information and communications technology (ICT) makes it possible for office workers to work from home and still enjoy access to office documents and email, as well as participating in meetings through the use of conference call facilities.
This has enabled new ways of working that create flexibility, choice and improved quality of life.
The event was opened by the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Social Policy, Dolores Cristina.
