The Valletta Rehabilitation Project is upset about damage it says was caused by contractors to the stretch of Old Theatre Street, in Valletta which runs alongside the President's palace.

The pavement is covered with lava tiles and cannot be replaced. It had recently been restored by the VRP at a cost of Lm9,000.

The contractor was laying pipes on behalf of Enemalta Corporation, it said.

VRP warned that in future, it would not approve requests to work in areas having pavements of historic importance unless the request guaranteed that an architect would exercise control over the work being done.
