Luxembourg pair, Tom Carier and Jacqui Komes, retained their European Small States championships titles yesterday after winning their respective categories for the second year running at the Salina Coast Road.

Carier was the first to cross the finishing line in the men's event in a combined time of 1:55.47. Bruno Fiore, of Monaco, was second in 1.56.30 ahead of Luxembourg's Jacques Lepen, 1.58.30.

Malta champion Dermot Galea was the first local triathlete home when placing sixth in 2.01.22 - 30 seconds slower than his timing last year.

Komes was in a class of her own yesterday after covering the distance in 2:14.22. She finished ahead of Maria Mifsud Bonnici (2:21.00) and Danica Spiteri (2.23.01).

The total entry list for the internationally-recognised event was 31 - 25 men and six women - hailing from Luxembourg, Monaco, Cyprus and Malta. The race consisted of a 1,500m swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run.
