Stamp sets
After reading the letters by Gorg Mifsud-Chircop (May 13) and Anthony Charles (May 16) and agreeing with both, I just have to have my say on the stamps Maltapost is regaling (burdening?) us with, and especially about the unsatisfactory way some of the official bulletins of the philatelic bureau are being written/presented.
Dr Mifsud-Chircop wrote about the St George paintings set. Instead of a general write-up I would have preferred an explanation of each painting, eg who painted it and where it is to be found. As it is, one can be easily forgiven for concluding that all five paintings are the work of one Joseph Mizzi!
Dr Charles mentioned the kusksu bil-ful stamp. Actually, I thought it was soppa ta' l-armla but most people, I find, think it is a pizza! Again, in the bulletin introducing the Maltese cuisine set of stamps there is no explanation of the different dishes next to them. If even Maltese people cannot fathom what dishes the stamps represent, what about foreigners?
Which brings me to the Small Games stamps. Incidentally, why not Small Nations Games? At Lm4.50 a set I am sure that most people will find it too expensive and not buy it.
Has anyone thought of youngsters (for whom stamp collecting is such a wonderful, wholesome hobby) or of pensioners (who are always being encouraged to keep active) or have the people behind this set thought only of the subsidy for the show opening the games (inspired by that of the Olympic Games in Australia) with all the giraffes and things we saw in The Times (May 16)?
