The Mellieha Northenders were made to fight harder than expected before having the better of national league rivals Gzira Mustangs 5-4 and qualify for their first Championship Series since 2000.

Mellieha set the pace, scoring the first two runs of the game and taking a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning with consistent defence and spectacular pitching from Keith Bartolo who struck out 16 opponents.

The Mustangs fought back admirably and scored two runs in the seventh inning to tie the score at 4-4. In the bottom half of the inning Mellieha kept their composure as Nicky Bartolo scored the winning run after being driven in by an unlikely hero, young Joseph Vella.

Mellieha will now play the Gozo Tornadoes in a best-of-three final series which starts this weekend.
