What is the source of air pollution in Malta?

Air pollution can be caused by many factors. In Malta, the main sources of air pollution are traffic and the power stations. Traffic exhaust emits lead into the air and the power stations also emit certain substances, including dust. All this affects our health and over the years, respiratory problems have increased. This has a human cost but also a financial cost to the public health sector. EU law attacks air pollution by limiting it at source and by making these limits legally binding.

What is being done to tackle the problem of air pollution?

Malta is in the process of adopting and applying all EU standards with regard to the quality of air. It will have achieved this by membership, although in some cases, it has negotiated some extra time after membership to have enough time to adjust.
