Attard two clays better than Micallef in Trap selection shoots
Joins Pace in Malta team
Sunday at the Bidnija Ranges was the final day of a two-day Trap competition on 125 and a 25-clay final. The first 75 clays were shot on Saturday and the remaining 50 and barrage the following day.
The prize at stake was the Bonnici Bros. Trophy, but more importantly for Elite shooters, it was the last of five selection shoots for the GSSE selection next month.
All in all, the selections brought about a high level of shooting where most of the shooters in each final cleared the MQS mark of 112. These remarkable scores encourage the federation in preparing its athletes in a sport that has always brought medals to our country.
In the initial selections Frans Pace and Horace Micallef demonstrated some high level of shooting that set everyone thinking that this renowned medal-winning tandem were to be in the team.
This was not the case though. While Pace left no breathing space for the other competitors, Micallef slowed down his momentum. This gave the opportunity for Noel Attard to produce some great scores to catch up.
Micallef had been away from competitive shooting for seven years and although his touch is still there, as he clearly demonstrated, coming back to such important selections probably took more than a chip of the old block to surpass.
In the end, Attard's excellent consistency saw him claiming one of the two berths in the Malta Trap team along with Pace.
In all, 625 clays were shot in the selections... Attard won his place just two clays better than Micallef.
