A total lunar eclipse occurred early yesterday morning when the moon passed through earth's shadow, changing from white to a reddish colour.

The moon first encountered earth's central shadow at 4.03 a.m. and total eclipse began at 5.14 a.m. However, dawn stole most of the spectacle as the sun rose at 5.56 a.m.

Dawn on May 31 will show the rising sun with a small notch - the moon's silhouette on the solar disc.
