A 22-year-old man was yesterday put on probation for three years and fined Lm150 for defiling a minor.

Carmelo Camilleri, of Luqa, pleaded guilty to defiling the girl and offending public morals in Ta' Xbiex on November 20, 2001.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera noted that Camilleri had apologised to the girl and had cooperated with police.

She ruled that although a jail term was not appropriate, Camilleri deserved to be put on probation for the maximum amount of time prescribed by law.

Police Inspectors Louise Calleja and Stephen Gatt prosecuted.
