A man yesterday told a court how his estranged wife smashed a glass in his face soon after her boyfriend approached him and challenged him to a fight.
Kenneth Mizzi explained how he had just arrived at the Cerviola Hotel and was on his way to the bar with some friends when Id-Dajdu, his estranged wife's boyfriend, went up to him and started insulting him for no apparent reason.
"Then I saw Michelle (the ex-wife) grab a long glass and throw it at me. It all happened in a split second... The next thing I saw was a fountain of blood gushing out of my face," he said.
Mizzi testified before Magistrate Abigail Lofaro in the compilation of evidence against his ex-wife who is pleading not guilty to seriously injuring him in the face and breaching the peace in Marsascala on January 12 at about 3.30 a.m.
He said he had never spoken to his ex-wife's boyfriend but his children had told him that they were living together and he had phoned to tell her that he did not like the children living with someone like him.
He said that on the day of the incident it was his turn to look after the children but he had not gone for them because his ex-wife had scratched his car the last time he had.
Earlier, Mizzi's friend, David Aquilina, said he saw Anthony Abela, known as Id-Dajdu, insult Mizzi and his ex-wife throw a glass at him.
The case continues.
Police Inspector Alfred Mallia is prosecuting.
Dr Joseph Giglio and Dr Roberto Montalto is appearing for Michelle Mizzi while Dr Albert Libreri is representing Kenneth Mizzi.
