Call for wage rises link to productivity

The Federation of Industry has called on the government to change the basis on which wage increases are negotiated, insisting they be linked to increases in productivity and take into account the country's competitiveness levels.

The FOI said it recently discussed the matter with Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami.

Another matter discussed was the need to conclude negotiations on giving Maltese operators in the food and beverages sector free access to EU markets before membership next year.

The FOI delegation also pointed out that given the vast amounts of legislation adopted by Malta, the authorities should adopt more of an educational and guidance role rather than just enforcing the law, especially with regard SMEs.
