I fully concur with Charles Micallef's recommendation (May 1) that Alfred Sant be appointed commissioner in Brussels. Being the quintessential European intellectual and a latter-day St Francis rolled into one, he stands a good chance provided that (a) he apologises to all Europeans whom Malta hosted over the last few years and (b) there is a Labour government in Malta.

In the meantime, Dr Sant will be free to contest the elections for the European Parliament.
