The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses is today joining the rest of the world in marking International Nurses' Day.

In a statement, the MUMN said May 12 was significant for nurses because it was the birthday of Florence Nightingale - recognised as being the first person to give nursing a professional dimension.

The MUMN said it believed the Maltese deserved the best professionals to care for them in the best environment. It was therefore working to ensure that nurses continued to advance academically in their professional career.

It was also committed to ensure that the professionals it represented enjoyed the best possible conditions of work and that they gave care which reached a level of excellence.

It said nurses should be given more professional autonomy and not remain under the domain of other professionals.
