The seventh annual Gozo Lace Day was organised last week by the University of Malta - Gozo Centre, at the centre in Mgarr.

The event included speeches and exhibitions of textile crafts, demonstrations of pillow covering, card weaving and information about short courses covering different aspects of lace making.

The Gozo Lace and Handcrafts Co-operative had a stand with lace-making materials, including bobbins, thread, patterns and finished lace.

Minister Giovanna Debono praised the initiative taken by the Gozo Centre's Lace-Making Programme for organising this event and conducting course. Professor Maurice Cauchi, member of the centre's board, also spoke at the opening.

Lace Programme co-ordinator Consiglia Azzopardi gave a lecture entitled "Evaluation of Maltese Lace". Fr J. Manicaro delivered a talk on religious symbolism in lace-making.

The event was attended by members of the National Council of Women. Centre administrator Joseph Calleja said that this event is proving to be successful year after year, as indicated by the numerous lace-makers and accompanying visitors who call at the centre throughout the day.
