The government and the opposition have nominated the five observers to the European Parliament earmarked for Malta.

They are Josef Bonnici, Michael Frendo and Tonio Fenech for the government and the opposition's George Vella and John Attard Montalto.

Dr Attard Montalto is currently the only contender for the post of Labour leader, nominations for which close today. The party conference deciding the leadership is being held on Thursday, just three days after the observers' first commitment, a session of the European parliament in Strasbourg on Monday.

The Speaker, Anton Tabone, was yesterday officially informed of the nominations, and he, in turn, advised the president of the European Parliament Pat Cox.
