Twenty Labour councillors have signed a cryptic declaration saying they are looking ahead towards the renewal of the Labour Party.

The statement, circulated to the media, said that the party had always become stronger when it faced up to change and renewal.

It said that the need for change was all the more urgent after the electoral result.

However, with nominations for the leadership post closing today, they did not specify whether the change they had in mind was that of leader or of the party's policies.

"Our choice in favour of change and renewal is considered to be the choice between the life and death of the party," the statement said.

"Malta needs a strong Labour Party which would support the population, especially those who are vulnerable.

"Now the time has come for important decisions, to end any uncertainty among us, and to embark on the road which will make us a strong and constructive opposition in the near future and eventually a Labour government which would work in the interest of all the Maltese and Gozitans," it concluded.
