Casual elections are being held at Ta' Qali this morning to fill the seven seats vacated by members of parliament elected from two districts in the April 12 general election.

Nominations for the seats, one each on the third, fifth, eighth, ninth, and 11th districts and two seats on the 10th, were received by the Electoral Commission up to yesterday.

In all, 37 nominations from 34 candidates were submitted.

Candidates Louis Zammit (MLP, third district) and Mario Tabone Vassallo (PN, 11th district) did not submit their nomination.

They are the only candidates on the district where a seat is being vacated by an MP from their respective party who are not contesting that MP's seat.

Neither Mr Zammit nor Dr Tabone Vassallo have ever been elected to Parliament. Mr Zammit has been contesting elections with the Labour Party since 1992. He usually contests the second and third districts but this time round he only contested the third. Dr Tabone Vassallo has contested this election for the first time. Besides the 11th district, he also contested the first.

The seat on the third district, which was vacated by MLP deputy leader George Vella, is being contested by Joseph Abela, Christopher Agius, Jesmar Baldacchino, Owen Bonnici, Joseph Cassar Delia and Alfred Portelli.

That on the fifth district, vacated by Education Minister Louis Galea, will have vying for it Helen D'Amato, Franco Debono, Ivan Schembri, Anna Schiavone, Nadine Sciberras and Helga Zahra.

The seat vacated by Labour leader Alfred Sant, on the eighth district, is being contested by John Buttigieg, Joe Debono Grech and Myriam Spiteri Debono.

Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech vacated the seat on the ninth district. Contesting it are Joseph Falzon, Michael Frendo, Franco Galea, Carmel Grima, Ian Micallef, Melvyn Mifsud, Albert Rizzo and John Vella.

The seat on the 10th district vacated by Foreign Minister Joe Borg is being contested by Michael Frendo, Franco Galea, George Hyzler, Melvyn Mifsud and Michael Refalo.

That on the same district vacated by Labour MP Evarist Bartolo is being contested by Joseph Cuschieri, Martin Debono, Robert Micallef and Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.

The seat vacated by Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami, on the 11th district, is being contested by Josef Bonnici, Philip Borg, Joseph Cassar, Nazju Cassar and Rennie Deguara.

The MPs elected today will join the other 58 in parliament when it meets on May 24. This will be the 10th parliament since independence.

The Department of Information will be publishing on the internet the official results of all counts of today's elections as soon as they are received from the Electoral Commission.

The results may be accessed from the general election banner appearing on the DOI website.
