I thank Joan Schranz for her contribution (April 29) about a commemoration in Floriana of my uncle, Prof. Joseph J. Mangion.
Uncle Joe's contribution to the benefit of Floriana was enormous - in a medical, dental and civic sense, as Ms Schranz pointed out. This philanthropic work was more than that. He is remembered not only for his medical and dental expertise and knowledge, but also for his charisma, kindness and selfless love for Floriana and il-Furjanizi.
Uncle Joe did us, his family, Floriana, as well as Malta, proud, even beyond our shores, where he was received and much respected by fellow professors and dentists.
I, therefore, cannot but feel that it is a gross and gaping omission on the part of Floriana local council that Prof. Mangion has not yet been commemorated in any way in Floriana. A street named after him is the least the local council should do to remember a benefactor still much loved and respected by all living senior citizens in Floriana, and elsewhere for that matter.
Any further comments on my part at this stage are superfluous. Now only action is warranted, by Floriana local council.
