Appreciation: Lorenzo Schiavone, MA (Lond), Dip. Educ. (Lond)

by Ms Ileana Curmi

A former pupil and then a colleague of my father's (Dr Giovanni Curmi) at the Lyceum and also a family friend, Lorenzo Schiavone passed away suddenly after the briefest of brief illnesses (as he always wished) at midday on Good Friday, probably the best day of the year to die on, and was laid to rest on Easter Sunday - Resurrection Day - quite fittingly for such a deeply religious man.

Although of humble origin (something he never made a secret of) he was one of the most erudite persons I have known and, after my father's death, he was the one person I turned to whenever I needed any elucidation on some point of Italian language or literature.

Mr Schiavone was the elderly gentleman I wrote about in my article "Three Thoughts" (The Sunday Times, March 3, 1996) who "has a seemingly never-ending supply of recollections of his childhood and of the various experiences he has lived through. I enjoy hearing them not only because they are interesting in themselves but also because they reveal a life that has been lived to the full and remarkably well spent."

Most of the recollections had to do with his native Zejtun. The pretty little girl and the good doctor who were killed during an air raid, the band club where he was secretary and the small church he looked after for some time, come readily to mind (he also played the organ, sometimes even at wedding ceremonies). Then there were the Italian prisoners of war he befriended, some of whom and their families he remained in contact with until the end, even going to see them on his yearly visits to Italy - just as he used to visit our mutual friend Professore Pietro Insana, until the latter's death.

Mr Schiavone met his Italian wife - Dottoressa Bianca Fiorentini - in London, during the 1948 Olympic Games. She too was a scholar and they both carried out a lot of research work at the National Library, both concentrating on what can be described as original subjects that had not been written about before. She concentrated on 19th century Malta - especially Italian exiles and newspapers and he on Italian Knights of St John.

While his book on Grand Master Del Ponte is outstanding, the various articles he published in Italian learned journals on the various commanderies of the Knights in Italy are extremely interesting. Available in offprint form at the National Library, they deserve to be better known and appreciated.

A librarian friend who happens to know that I am writing this, describes Mr Schiavone as an extremely pleasant person and an assiduous researcher.

The numerous former students of Mr Schiavone's at the Lyceum and the University and the many who went to him, or to his wife, for private lessons, remember them both as excellent teachers.

Mr Schiavone remained active to the very end and it was only very recently that he started to agree with me that all stairs (especially the ones at the Bibliotheca) should have sturdy handrails on both sides and going all the way up/down!

I am indeed grateful to Mr Schiavone for his friendship (he must have considered me an extension of my father), for his concern for me when I was ill and for his frequent visits to me in hospital.
