Kevin Attard, 32, of Kalkara was yesterday arraigned in court for attempting to murder a policeman in the St Julian's police station at 3.30 a.m. that day.

He was accused of stabbing PC Jonathan Farrugia, who suffered slight injuries.

He was also accused of carrying a pointed instrument, without a licence, threatening, offending and attacking the policeman and breaching public peace outside Fuego in Paceville at around 3 a.m.

Attard was also accused of violently resisting and slightly injuring PC Andrew St John.

The prosecution argued against bail, insisting on the "gravity and nature" of the "cold-blooded" crime.

Attard was granted bail of Lm4,000 and a personal guarantee of Lm10,000 by Magistrate Abigail Lofaro.

Mr Attard's lawyer, Dr Edward Zammit Lewis, pleaded that the accused who had been suffering from depression for three years, was under medication and unemployed.

Dr Lofaro ordered the accused not to leave his house before 7.30 a.m. and to return home no later than 6.30 p.m. He was also forbidden from going near the night life areas of St Julian's, Paceville, Sliema, Bugibba, Qawra and Marsascala.
