Both mobile phone operators last week announced that from tomorrow they are going to charge their subscribers 10c for every SMS sent to a foreign network, following the introduction of charges by foreign mobile operators.

Vodafone said the charge was being effected to ensure that its customers continue benefiting from an uninterrupted SMS service to all their relatives and friends abroad.

Go Mobile said the new rate was being introduced due to new charges by foreign mobile operators which were beyond its control. All other SMSes, including SMSes sent from Malta to subscribers of both local mobile networks who are roaming on international networks, will continue to be charged at 2c per message.

In its statement Vodafone said until recently foreign mobile operators did not impose any charges for SMSes originating from networks outside their territory. The popularity of SMSes has lead to a significant upsurge in SMS traffic all over the world.

This has brought about an introduction of charges for such SMSes or the outright blockage of the SMSes should the originating network not accept to pay the tariff charge

"Numerous Vodafone Malta customers keep in touch with their family and friends abroad via SMS," marketing manager Simon Mizzi said.

"These new charges had to be implemented to continue providing all Vodafone Malta customers with an undisrupted SMS service to foreign networks."

The rate adjustment was sanctioned and approved by the Malta Communications Authority.
