EPP congratulations

The chairman of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, was the first international leader to congratulate Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami.

"It is indeed a pleasure for me to express on behalf of the EPP-ED Group and on my own behalf our most heartfelt congratulations on your success in the general election," Mr Poettering said in a statement, shortly after the result became known.

He said the election results also confirmed for a second time the decision of the people of Malta in favour of joining the EU.

"This moment is also historic for the Maltese nation as this pro-EU choice will have a lasting impact on the future of Malta for generations to come.

"Again congratulations and every best wish - I look forward to meeting you later this week in Athens."
