Maltacom yesterday launched a wireless local area network service, based on the Wi-Fi Networking Technology, at the Hilton, in St Julian's.

Hilton is the first hotel in Malta to offer the system, Tumas Group managing director George Fenech said.

Maltacom chairman Maurice Zarb Adami said Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, enabled users to connect to the internet without wires, from specific points.

The service has also been launched on trial at the law courts and in Republic Square, Valletta. It will soon be launched in other areas, including a hotel in Gozo and parliament.

The system, he said, could currently be used with a Wi-Fi card or through Go Mobile. This, he said, was not just a Maltacom project. Other operators could also take part. Mr Fenech pointed out that more than four million such systems were sold in 2002.
