The Malta Students Sports Federation (MSSF), under the chairmanship of David Azzopardi, recently organised the annual handball tournament for Under-16 players. The event was held in conjunction with the Malta Handball Association (MHA).
Five teams participated in this category where three sides were placed in Section A with the other two teams involved in a direct play-off in Section B.
The Section A matches, played on two rounds, were staged at De La Salle College where the hosts were superior for their opponents, namely San Andrea and St Martin's College.
In fact, De La Salle had the better of San Andrea 10-0 and 11-0 and easily disposed of St Martin's College 11-4 and 15-2. In the other matches, San Andrea beat St Martin's College 2-1 while in the return match, St Martin's College won 7-4. This meant that De La Salle and St Martin's College qualified for the final phase.
In the only Section B match played at St Aloysius College, hosts St Aloysius simply swept aside Savio College with a fine 23-3 victory.
The final phase, played at De La Salle College, again saw a complete domination by the hosts as they first annihilated St Martin's College 26-1 and later won 19-9 against St Aloysius College, who then won 21-2 against St Martin's College to finish second.
At the end of the event, MSSF chairman Azzopardi stressed the Federation's commitment to collaborate with the MHA to aid the further development of the game in Malta.
