What are Paul, George, John and Ringo doing in a jazz concert? The music of the Beatles is the theme in "The Beatles Works" at St James Cavalier on Friday and Saturday.
Pianist Vinny Vella Jnr., being a Beatles fan, had this project in mind for some time and following encouragement from bassist Mario "Cocker" Aquilina, eventually decided to get the music of Lennon and McCartney arranged in a jazz concept.
Leading drummer Noel Grech and saxophonist Walter Vella, play regularly with Vinny so it was easy to get this band together and work on ideas. The result was an interesting fusion from pop to jazz of some of the best known tunes in the world.
Although most of the songs performed will be instrumental, and rely heavily on improvisation, singer Nadine Axisa teamed up with the band for this event and will provide warmth in songs like Something and a completely revamped Ticket to ride.
The Friday performance starts at 9 p.m. and on Saturday at 8.30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Tickets cost Lm2.50. For bookings call 2122-3200, fax 2122-3218 or e-mail boxoffice@sjcav.org.
