A few days ago we were introduced to the Malta Labour Party's policy plans regarding persons with disabilities. We noted with satisfaction that a concerted effort is to be made for political parties, the Church and local non-government organisations to work together for the improvement of this sector.
Unfortunately, we also heard, once again, about the proposal that parts of St Luke's Hospital be converted into residential apartments for disabled persons.
Perhaps this news was met with approval by some parents of persons with disability, especially parents of persons with an intellectual disability. They may see this as a solution to the very real problem of what happens when they are no longer able to take care of their disabled children.
However, I am sure that the majority of people with mobility, visual and hearing impairments did not receive this news with any satisfaction. Clearly, none of us wish that, come the day, we will be living anywhere near St Luke's Hospital. St Luke's is a place which has many bad memories for us: memories of illness, pain, isolation and close brushes with death. No amount of refurbishment can erase the memories we have of this building and its surroundings.
We are convinced of the need for more small residences in the community, where disabled persons can live a life of dignity. We do not wish to be institutionalised and become a mere number.
It is crucial that this subject is treated with more seriousness. It is crucial that all disabled persons who can go on living their life in their family home and in their community are given the support to do so, through a personal assistant scheme.
It is equally important that more disabled persons make their voices heard about this issue. After all, we are talking about our own future.
