Snooker, billiards festival starts today at Marsascala

The Corinthia Jerma Palace Hotel will be the centre of attraction for local snooker and billiards fans for the next nine days. As from this evening this venue in Marsascala will be hosting three prestigious events - the national snooker championships, the snooker Continental Team Cup and the professional World Billiards Championship.

It is the first occasion that the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association and Snooker Promotions are collaborating together with a view to improving all aspects of the game in Malta.

The cue-ball starts rolling this evening with the semi-finals of the national championships in various MBSA categories.

The main focus will be on the Premier Division semi-finals. Here, Alex Borg takes on Simon Zammit while Simon Camilleri entertains Duncan Bezzina.

All semi-finals start at 5 p.m. The finals are scheduled for Monday.

Tomorrow, the First International Continental Cup will get underway with 13 countries, namely, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Holland, Hungary, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland and Malta, all vying for the title.

As hosts, Malta, who won the honour three times, will be fielding four teams. The tournament comes to a close on Sunday.

An international ladies competition will run concurrently with this team event. Malta will be represented by Karen Grech.

The billiards championship, also sponsored by First International, will be played between April 1 and 3. This competition will feature some of the world's top players in this field.

Premier League: A. Borg vs S. Zammit; S. Camilleri vs D. Bezzina.

Division One: R. Lewis vs A. Licari; C. Grima vs M. Grima.

Division Two: J. Camilleri vs J. Schembri/S. Chircop; P. Portelli vs K. D'Agostino.

Division Three: C. Attard vs M. Caruana; R. Caruana vs G. Galea.

Boys: K. Grech vs C. Zammit; P. Coleiro vs C. Grima.

Live on TV

Arrangements have been made for live broadcasts of the Continental Cup matches on Melita Cable channel 32. This will take place daily between tomorrow and Sunday. The MBSA official website (www.mbsa.org.mt) will also feature a live scoring service throughout the tournament.
