Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday stressed the need for a radical overhaul of the public transport system in a bid to reduce the growing pollution problem.

AD launched its public transport proposals at a news conference at the bus terminus in Valletta.

AD candidate Mark Scerri said that private cars, traffic and pollution had continued to worsen, while the use of public transport was constantly on the decline.

The government should have the determination to carry out reforms with the aim of restoring public confidence in this sector, Mr Scerri said.

"The state should provide a decent, disciplined and punctual service which caters for more routes," he argued.

AD was also in favour of the liberalisation of the public transport sector since this would provide the consumer with more choice.

Liberalisation would also cater for more local and specific needs such as panoramic routes, transport to entertainment venues and shuttle transport services on a local or district level, Mr Scerri said.
