Spanish Foreign Minister Ana Palacio congratulated her Maltese counterpart Joe Borg on the positive result obtained in the referendum on Malta's membership of the European Union.

In a letter, the minister said that "Spain, along with the rest of the European Union member states, rejoices that the Maltese people have taken profit from this historic opportunity to rejoin the great European family".
