Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami yesterday laid the foundation stone for a new government secondary school at the limits of Kirkop and Safi, the first that will be built entirely by the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools. Alongside the school, a regional sports complex will be constructed.

The government is investing Lm2.5 million in the 40-classroom school and Lm2 million in the sports complex.

The school and complex occupy a site measuring over 26,000 square metres and will include parking for 168 cars and 13 coaches.

Education Minister Louis Galea said at the ceremony that the present demand was for a school with a student population of 750, but to meet future needs the school was being designed for 1,000 students.

The government was also studying whether it would be possible to work towards a system whereby students stayed in the same school from kindergarten to secondary school, as was the case in many Church and private schools.
