Robbers ram car in daring theft

A couple returning home from a night at a casino were robbed of cash and jewellery in an unusual crime that took place in the small hours of yesterday morning, the police said.

The 63-year-old man and his 58-year-old wife were on their way home when they were rammed by a small red car in Sir Paul Boffa Avenue, Paola, at about 4.30 a.m.

As the man got out of the car to assess the damage, two hooded men rushed out of the red car, sprayed pepper spray in his face and took some Lm300 in cash as well as the precious items worn by the couple.

One of the robbers then ordered the couple to get back into their car, which he drove, while his accomplice drove behind them in the robbers' car.

When the two cars arrived near the Turkish Cemetery, in Marsa, the robbers took the victims' car keys and drove off in the red car, leaving them stranded.

The victims had to walk all the way to the Paola police station to file a report.

CID Inspector David Saliba and district police are investigating.
