The latest additions at the Mediterraneo Marine Park of Bahar ic-Caghaq are two juvenile Patagonian sea lions - Joey and Dolly.

The sea lions were born five years ago in a park in Switzerland and have been living together since. Before being brought to the Mediterraneo they were staying in a park in Italy.

This particular type of sea lion originates from the coastline region of South America. They can be found in their thousands in Patagonia in Argentina.

Patagonian sea lions are capable of orientating themselves to both warm and cold climates.

Mediterraneo marketing manager Natasha Spiteri said a new programme, "Meet the animals", has been introduced where guests can not only learn about sea lions, but also meet them at close quarters.

Ms Spiteri said Dolly has turned out to be very gentle and apart from allowing visitors to stroke her, she even ventures closer to give them a kiss.

Ms Spiteri said that with the arrival of Joey and Dolly, the park is experiencing a positive increase in attendance, particularly where families and children are concerned.

The Mediterraneao Marine Park is under new Italian management.
