Fiercely loyal to her hero Eddie Fenech Adami, 94-year-old Olga Cauchi, who lives in Gozo, trusts the prime minister completely and wants Malta to become a member of the EU.

But as she is bed-ridden she could not go along to cast her vote last Saturday and Labour leader Alfred Sant, in answer to a journalist's question at a news conference on Monday, welcomed her "to the club".

Dr Sant has declared that he considers all those who did not vote and who invalidated their vote in the referendum as being against membership and in favour of his "partnership" option.

Asked if she had now joined the Labour Party, Mrs Cauchi's prompt reply was "mai e mai" (never and never).

"I have always voted for the PN and I would have voted for EU membership. Eddie is the best," she said yesterday at her flat in Marsalforn.

Mrs Cauchi may have lost her mobility but she stands four square behind the prime minister. She said she would never vote for the MLP or against what her party advised.
