The Computing Services Centre is organising ECDL courses for members of staff, University students and prospective PGCE students.

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is an internationally recognised qualification that enables students and members of staff to demonstrate their competence in using a personal computer and common computer applications at a basic level. The ECDL programme is aimed at ordinary computer users rather than technical computer people.

ECDL aims to promote and encourage computer literacy for all, raise the level of knowledge about Information Technology (IT) and the level of competence in using personal computers and common computer applications for all citizens within Europe and internationally; ensure all computer users understand best practices and the advantages of using a personal computer; increase the productivity of all employees who need to use computers in their work; enable better returns for investments in IT; provide a basic qualification which allows all people, regardless of their background, to be part of the Information Society.

The implementation of ECDL at University offers potential benefits for all members of the campus community: The skills outlined in the ECDL syllabus provide all members of staff and students with a sound IT background to operate efficiently within the campus computer network.

Students would also benefit from the fact that on leaving University they would have an internationally recognised qualification of computer competence. Computer proficiency is becoming increasingly important in the competitive employment market faced by graduates.

Some University departments may also benefit from the ECDL programme. From time to time these departments organise computer induction courses for students as part of their course programme. Non-standardised tests are usually held at the end of such courses. ECDL would solve the problems arising from the administering of such tests.
