The beginning of this year marked a special event at Dun Karm Scerri Naxxar Primary School. As part of the Comenius Project "Twinkle, Twinkle Euro Stars", teachers from Spain, Italy, England and Romania visited our school. These partners together with teachers from school met to plan and discuss the project schedule for the next scholastic year.
During this year children from the five schools will work together to learn about traditions, jobs, culture, families and environmental issues in the local communities.
This will be achieved through the use of ICT, illustrations, postcards and research designed by children in collaboration with their teachers. Such knowledge will enable these youngsters to understand the diversity and underlying unity between the European countries.
As part of the activities organised during the teachers' stay, a school concert with the participation of Year 5 children was held on January 17. Traditional gifts were exchanged between schools and the Naxxar mayor, Dr Maria Deguara, who presented a memento to each participant.
Afterwards, Year 3 pupils sang a Spanish song Los peces en el Rio, which children from Analucia, Spain, had also learnt during the Christmas period.
Our guests were then treated to typical Maltese fare, including traditional biskuttini tar-rahal and bigilla. Finally, a special school assembly was held where children presented our guests with Maltese crafts which were prepared during, the Wednesday mid-week activities. These gifts were exchanged with partner schools.
The activity was a huge success. As project co-ordinator I was ably assisted by the school administration, teaching staff, parents, students and the Naxxar community.
During their short stay the teachers visited important landmarks of our island. All in all this was a wonderful experience where pupils and teachers found great pride in demonstrating what Malta and the Maltese people have to offer to foreigners. We hope that planned activities in the coming months and years will be as positive as this one.
