Education Minister Louis Galea yesterday announced the construction of halls in five state schools at a cost of over Lm1.5 million.

Speaking during a news conference, Dr Galea said the schools benefiting from this initiative were the primary schools in Gudja, Marsaxlokk, Mqabba, Safi and Siggiewi.

The project is part of an eight-year programme in which all state schools are being modernised and given more facilities.

More than Lm60 million have been budgeted for the programme, which is being carried out by the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools.

Dr Galea said the school halls were being designed on modern concepts which permitted flexibility, enabling them to cater for a wide range of activities.

Work on the halls is expected to start before summer and be completed within two years.

The foundation also plans to build five new schools and a regional sports complex.
