Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg has appointed former judge Franco Depasquale as the chairman of the new police board.

The board will investigate complaints with regard to members of the police corp.

The board was set up through the police code which came into effect on January 1.

Dr Borg has also appointed Gemma Siroll, Paul Agius, Paul Saliba and Pio Scerri as members of the board.

Dr Borg explained that the public would be able to submit complaints for investigation by the board. The board will be able to call people to testify.

The board will have similar functions to the Ombudsman and will also be able to investigate cases even if no complaint has been filed.
