Two Maltese martial artists were among 700 athletes, representing 25 countries, who recently competed in the AMA International Karate Open in Nottingham, UK.
Chris Galea and Lucienne Galea, from the Shotokan Karate School of Malta (SKSM), represented the country in this two-day event after some intensive preparation during these past two months.
Lucienne Galea was the first to achieve gold in the seniors' Kata.
In the finals, she eliminated two world class athletes from the UK and Belgium. Galea then went on to win another gold medal in the Over 30 category where she saw off the stiff challenge of all her opponents, including a British martial artist in the final.
Chris Galea, SKSM head, competed in two events as well. He won a silver medal but then had to retire with muscle pain.
SKSM members are currently preparing for another international tournament in Italy, next month. Meanwhile, all school members are in their build-up for the National Kata Championships on March 16.
