The chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika, Harry Vassallo (picture), said yesterday he was confident of a positive result in the local council elections.

"During house visits, our candidates are finding encouragement and support. We are finding a broad consensus on AD's proposals and we are confident that AD will achieve a very positive result.

"Our candidates will rise above the partisan pique which characterises Maltese politics in general. This will bring a breath of fresh air to the eight local councils we are contesting."

Speaking during a recent party activity, accompanied by the eight AD local election candidates, Dr Vassallo outlined the Green Party's priorities in these local elections.

"During this campaign we have focused on concrete issues facing residents in their daily lives. These issues include parking, inconveniences created by the construction industry, the need for more open spaces, a greater involvement of local civil society organisations and concrete steps to safeguard residents from criminality. We have also addressed the particular needs of each locality," he said.

The AD candidates are Chris Mizzi, Silvan Agius, Kurt Sansone, Mario Mallia, Michael Briguglio, Jurgen Balzan, James Camilleri and Ian Meli, contesting in San Gwann, Birkirkara, Sliema, Zabbar, Marsascala, Lija, Naxxar and Kalkara.
