The Malta Transport Authority yesterday signed an agreement with five local councils authorising them to carry out works on roads which fall under the central government's responsibility. The five councils are Zejtun, Rabat, Mgarr, Marsaxlokk and St Paul's Bay.

Transport Minister Censu Galea, who was present for the signing, said the councils would each be in a position to carry out Lm75,000 worth of road works within their locality.

The agreement will allow councils to start works on such roads immediately, and be reimbursed Lm25,000 per year over a period of three years.

Mr Galea said the government had so far allocated a fund of Lm500,000 to allow the authority to enter into such agreements with 20 local councils.
