Proposals for Lija
It is undisputed that local councils in Malta are here to stay. The idea that power should be decentralised and passed on to local councils has now become an important part of our democratic set-up.
Time and time again, local councils have improved the quality of life of residents of various localities around Malta and Gozo and have been, by and large, a success story. Alternattiva Demokratika strongly believes in the importance of local councils and, once again, will be contesting these elections on Saturday.
In Lija, AD has prepared a number of proposals which we feel can offer an important contribution to making Lija local council more effective in protecting the interests of residents.
We are making a number of proposals linked to safeguarding Lija's environment. These proposals include the protection of the last remaining green areas around Lija, the protection of Lija's historic village core, putting pressure to ensure stricter control on dust emissions emanating from factories in the area and the propagation of waste separation initiatives.
AD is also making a number of proposals in the social field. For example, we are proposing the restoration of Villa Francia and its use as a social centre for the benefit of all residents. The issue of traffic management and greater security is another issue which has been raised by many Lija residents. In this sector, we are proposing more effective speed limitation measures in the village core. We will also work to put pressure on the central government to open a police station in Lija.
As AD's candidate for Lija local council elections I can safely say that residents' response to these proposals has been very positive.
In Lija, and in all the localities where we are contesting, we are pledging our commitment and our experience in this field in favour of a better quality of life for all residents.
