A Moot Court Competition offers students the opportunity to bridge the gap between the lecture room environment and the courtroom. This year, for the first time, ELSA Malta is organising the national rounds of the ELSA Moot Court Competition. The finals shall be held at the WTO Centre in Geneva, and shall see the participation of 30 teams worldwide.

This year's case deals with a trade conflict between two large economic blocs arising when one bloc gives in to public opinion and commercial interests to impose a wide import ban over the fish products from the other country which allows the hunting of whales for 'scientific purposes' in spite of a moratorium on commercial whaling.

The competition is divided into two stages. In the first stage, teams are given approximately a month and a half to prepare a memorial (a written submission of their arguments as claimant and as respondent). Following this, the oral rounds are held, where the teams present their arguments in court on two occasions - once as claimant and once as respondent.

On the final day, the results of both the written and the oral rounds are announced and a winning team is established. ELSA Malta will send that team to Geneva to compete against further teams in an identical process to the above.

The national rounds will be held tomorrow and on Tuesday at 5.30 p.m. at the Law Courts, Valletta. Admission is free and all those interested in Trade Law are encouraged to attend. A reception shall be held after the winners are announced.

ELSA Malta would like to thank the main sponsors of this event: Malta Financial Services Authority, BOV Club, Air Malta.
