Carnival kept its traditional pre-Lenten appointment with Malta this year, offering a welcome distraction from the often hard-hitting political campaigning for Saturday's referendum on European Union membership.

Music blared loudly over loudspeakers on Freedom Square, Valletta, yesterday morning as young children in bright fancy costumes danced and frolicked to the tunes.

The rain and clouds of the past few days made way for the glorious sunshine yesterday as Carnival celebrations continued with the children's programme, dance competitions and a parade dominated by King Carnival.

Fluorescent-coloured floats once again dominated this year's Carnival and while some boasted imaginative designs and themes, others lacked originality.

Republic Street was jam-packed with young children dressed as mice, bunnies, cats or butterflies. On the other hand teenagers opted for a less conspicuous costume preferring to dress in trendier outfits.

Boys with water pistols mingled in the crowd, occasionally "firing" at an unsuspecting victim.

Meanwhile business was thriving with stalls selling prinjolata, mqaret, hot dogs, doughnuts, candy floss and toys.

Today's programme continues on Freedom Square, Valletta at 9 a.m. followed by a grand parade of floats which leaves Castille Square at 1.30 p.m.
