As the national campaign for EU membership entered its final phase, more and more organisations and individuals were pronouncing themselves in favour, the prime minister noted yesterday.

Speaking at a public debate organised by IVA Movement in Floriana, Dr Eddie Fenech Adami said it was significant that the Association of General Retailers and Traders, GRTU, had issued a declaration saying that EU membership would be beneficial to the economy and the business community.

Dr Fenech Adami also noted the favourable stance taken by economist Vince Farrugia, the GRTU's director general.

He said it was even more significant that the GRTU's decision was unanimous: "We are all aware that there are elements in the country that are trying hard to scare small businessmen away from membership".

He also referred to the Malta Institute of Accountants, which has just published a survey showing that 92 per cent of its members are in favour of membership.

He said that the accountants' word on the issue was particularly important because of their continuous contact with the business community through their clients.

As the March 8 referendum approached, he said, it was crucial for everyone to realise that every vote counted.

The public meeting, chaired by Austin Bencini, included the participation of PN general secretary Joe Saliba and IVA general secretary David Casa.
